How to Measure for Your Bamboo Roller Blinds | UK Guide | The Organic Habitat

Measuring Guide for Your Bamboo Roller Blinds

Getting the measurements right is the key to a perfectly fitting blind! Follow this simple guide to ensure your new bamboo roller blinds from The Organic Habitat fit beautifully in your UK home.

What You'll Need:

  • Metal Tape Measure: Provides more accuracy than a cloth tape.
  • Pen & Paper: To note down your measurements.
  • Possibly a Step Ladder: For high windows.

Quick Tips Before You Start:

  • Measure in Centimetres (cm): Please provide all measurements in cm.
  • Measure Each Window: Windows that look the same size can differ slightly. Measure each one individually.
  • Check Measurements: Accuracy is vital! Double-check your measurements before ordering.
  • Look for Obstructions: Note any protruding handles, tiles, dado rails, or sockets that might affect the blind's fit or operation.

Step 1: Choose Your Fitting Type - Recess or Exact?

Decide whether you want your blind to fit inside the window recess or outside on the face of the wall/window frame.

  • Recess Fitting: The blind sits neatly inside the window opening (reveal). This is the most common fitting type for roller blinds.
    • Ideal for: A neat, contained look. When you have sufficient depth within the recess.
  • Exact Fitting (Face Fitting): The blind hangs outside the window opening, overlapping the wall on all sides.
    • Ideal for: Blocking more light, covering imperfect recesses, when there isn't enough depth in the recess, or for windows that open inwards.

Step 2: How to Measure for Recess Fitting (Inside the Recess)

Follow these steps if you want your blind to fit inside the window opening.

Measuring the Width:

  1. Using your metal tape measure, measure the inside width of the recess at the top, middle, and bottom.

  2. Note down the shortest measurement. This ensures the blind doesn't catch on the sides.

  3. Provide us with this shortest measurement.

    • Provide us with this shortest recess width. We will make the small, necessary deductions (approx. 1cm total) to ensure your blind fits and operates perfectly within the recess.

Measuring the Height (Drop):

  1. Using your metal tape measure, measure the inside height (drop) of the recess on the left, middle, and right.
  2. Note down the shortest measurement.
  3. Provide us with this shortest height measurement. We will make the blind to this exact drop.

Check Recess Depth & Obstructions: Ensure your window recess is deep enough to accommodate the rolled-up blind and its mechanism (check product specs for required depth). Note any obstructions like handles or vents.

(Exact Fitting Instructions)

Step 3: How to Measure for Exact Fitting (Outside the Recess)

Follow these steps if you want your blind to hang outside the window opening, overlapping the frame/wall.

Measuring the Width:

  1. First, measure the outside width of the window recess or the area you wish to cover.
  2. Decide how much you want the blind to overlap the recess on each side. We recommend at least 5cm to 7cm overlap on each side (so add 10cm to 14cm total to your recess width) to minimise light leakage.
  3. Calculate your final blind width: (Recess Width + Left Overlap + Right Overlap) = Final Exact Width.
  4. Provide us with this final calculated width. We will make the blind to this exact width.

Measuring the Height (Drop):

  1. Decide where you want the top of the blind to be fixed. We recommend at least 7cm to 10cm above the top of the recess.
  2. Decide where you want the bottom of the blind to finish (e.g., level with the windowsill, or often better, 5cm to 10cm below the windowsill to block light).
  3. Measure the total distance between these top and bottom points.
  4. Provide us with this final calculated height. We will make the blind to this exact drop.

Check for Obstructions: Note any obstructions like radiators, dado rails, picture rails, or electrical sockets that might interfere with the blind.

Step 4: Final Checks

  • Use a Metal Tape Measure: For accuracy.
  • Measure in Centimetres (cm).
  • Double-Check: Re-measure everything to be sure.
  • Obstructions: Make a note of any potential obstructions for either fitting type.
